Haven’t had all that much time, so I’m putting up some odds and ends I’ve drawn.

The aging guy heads were copied, more or less, from the book Drawing People, by Barbara Bradley.

Flying things, and a nerdy kid.

An old-fashioned “War of the Worlds” tripod, and a farmer’s cart. Why? I have no idea.

For some reason, these take about as long as the black and white ones! Going to try and do more. They’ll probably make more sense, get more relaxed as I go along. I’ve got a pile of stories. Just haven’t drawn (or painted) them, yet. This one come out of my head as I was drawing it. Still, it was inspired by the cowboy things the jam people were doing, and which I’ve put into a previous post.

After missing a couple of nights, I finally made it to the monthly Montreal Comic Jam. Took pictures, but now I’m lazy, and put them into a slide show. You can actually click on photos as they pass by above to read info about who’s in them, etc.

Enthused about watercolour, I brought my set of paints, forked bamboo brushes and grubby bottle of water, and badgered people to do a watercolour jam. I left them alone, and they performed a stellar job:

I did a sketch of these guys, who are the English-speaking division of the jam (except for me):

The scrawl in the upper corner is the title of a science fiction anthology from Tor Books Michael has a story in. Pretty cool, but I can’t find it on the web, so perhaps it hasn’t been released yet. More on this when I know.

Pidgies! Horsie in a circle!

A couple of the characters here are taken from Barbara Bradley’s book Drawing People: How to portray the clothed figure. Will have to talk about that, and some other books, some day.

Got some work to do. Just finding my way with a lot of drawings. I’m putting most of them up.

My commissions don’t call for watercolour, but if I can do things right in that, I can also handle the black and white. i like my new watercolour book, and also how things look in colour up here.

I think this sketch below, in pen on typing paper, will make an okay painting:

These are straight ink. I did a little overlay in photoshop of grey, and then moved it a bit. I like the “off-register” effect.

Not so happy with this businessman below, but I avoided photoshop tricks:

For some reason I felt it necessary to scan an entire watercolour sketchbook of mine today. It took all day, too. But I’m not putting any of it up, right now. The above is a new painting. I didn’t really finish it, but I seem to like it this way. Maybe later, I’ll add some things. But for now, it’s on to the next.

Also, a regular guy face. This one didn’t take long at all, and in fact was a warm-up for working on the knight thing, which had been left half-done for a long while. Maybe I’m just glad it’s over with.

These brush drawings feel bombastic to me. A little quieter now that they’re scanned and put up. Still, that big brush line seems to “yell” more than the spidery pen. Harsh contrasts.

The page below is from one of those big books, and it’s hard to cover all that area with the brush. Also, my ink was running out, so, I just had to go with it.

The two big heads are from photos of poets from this book of stories and quotes about poets in Montreal. Drawing from photographs is boring to me, but sometimes it gets me out of my own head. It’s a drab day, so there might be more drawing from inside.

I feel asleep earlier in the evening, so didn’t get to sleep when it was time for bed. Sinking in and out, I dreamed in that half awake way that a famous author was staying at my place. Unfortunately I forgot the name of his new book that he told me. Later, I made myself some too hot vegetable ramen soup, and drew these sketches.

I’m posting them in this “big” format because I kind of like how it takes over the computer screen. I’ve been lax on other duties, but will try to get to them, and not worry too much. Later!

Some of them in my mind. I did see a walking guy with a moustache, and some form of skyline. A Hercules plane flew over, but a James Bond jeep didn’t fall out. I saw Kate Beaton ponies on the web. Guess the figures will now be a valuable collectors item. That’s all for now.
