Passive-Aggressive Birds

By in cartoons, sketches

I wanted to put this cartoon up before some internet low-life steals the idea! That’s because I mentioned it on Twitter. @AJKandy thought that the birds would file nuisance complaints with the city until the pigs move away, while @MrBillyBones said that “You launch them at things, but they just bounce off …and then pout.”

Daniel Clowes and Seth

By in cartoons, current events, Montreal, photos

Saw them the other night, at an event sponsored by Drawn & Quaterly publications. Two big cartoonists at the tops of their games. Didn’t have much to say to us struggling types. Neither of them really uses a computer, or worries about people reading their comics. Clowes talked about what it was like being nominated [...]

Pleistocene Panic

By in ballpoint pen, cartoons, comics, current events, Pen & Ink

I was freaking out over current events, and looking at a candle flame in my Swedish Lantern. Thought of this story, and drew it all in one night. I wonder if this argument actually took place long ago? Here’s a bonus Rachel Maddow:

The Case of the Exploding Electric Toothbrush

By in Brush Pen, cartoons, colour, ruttan's place, sketches, watercolour

I’ve been using an electric toothbrush for a couple of months. A little nervous about it at first, because the sound of it in my mouth was like the dental tools which still make me shivery. But it seemed to do a great job polishing the teeth, making them white and shiny. That was until [...]

Light Box Mark II

By in Brush Pen, cartoons, cats, colour, ruttan's place, sketches

As related in an earlier post on my tumblr blog, this year I built a light box, to trace drawings for watercolours. It was made out of a cardboard box my scanner came in, a couple of dollar store LED light bars, and a square of frosted glass I’d found in an alley. It was [...]

More Gag Panels

By in black and white, cartoons, collaboration, Richard Gagnon

I think there are more, but I can’t find them. Should have pretended I was reprinting them from some long-dead Men’s or Family magazine. And this popped up on Twitter just as I was writing this post, and I can’t resist: http://mikelynchcartoons.blogspot.com/2011/01/saturday-evening-post-scrapbook-part-24.html

Gag Cartoons 1

By in cartoons, collaboration, Jeff Leblanc, Richard Gagnon

I wrote and drew a few gag cartoons, which my pal Rick Gagnon inked in his usual impeccable way. We submitted them to Reader’s Digest, who wasn’t bowled over, so they found a home in Rick’s zine, and now are here on the web. Jeff Leblanc did the masthead. Hey, I was aiming for humour [...]

Les 48 heures de la bande dessinée de Montréal

By in cartoons, collaboration, comics, Montreal, photos, workshop

I was at the above-named event today. Plenty of cartoonists, plenty of cartoons. A surprise for me, because I didn’t know many of them. The Montreal comics scene is indeed diverse. The first day, Saturday, is devoted to creating strips: cartoonists are paired up to produce these. Sunday is for displaying the finished work to [...]

Getting Out of Here.

By in Brush Pen, Burlesque, cartoons, colour, men, sketches, watercolour, women

But not before I post some new junk, sort of comic related. First, a Daisy Mae: She sorts of fits into my trying to do “good girl” art, related to that burlesque project, which has kind of gone on hold for the moment. Then there’s this item I drew on a Twitter challenge. Unfortunately, I [...]

Tennis

By in cartoons, colour, comics, men, watercolour, women

Another elaborate, but short watercolour comic. That’s all there is to this one! Gonna do these on heavier paper from now on, instead of in my book. And yes, I like the sometimes ragged edges on the panels, and all the imperfections.

Keep Kicking that Can Around

By in cartoons, colour, comics, sketches, watercolour

Was pretty down today, but doing this cheered me up. Just left blank bubbles and squares, then filled them in with whatever. Mainly according to songs I was listening to on the shuffle.

Not the Usual Face Painter

By in cartoons, Richard Gagnon

You don’t want me for your childrens’ face painter. There’s a community thing happening in a week or two at Parc Mederic Martin, a neglected little park a block or two east of here. It’s based on a sort of Parisian model of the park with the long centre walk, but left to seed. The [...]

“Compassion Club” Raids

By in cartoons, Montreal

I did one of my now-rare political cartoons, about this story. I was mad at the time, and wondering if the drawing would be too harsh, but now it seems kind of mild. Ink seems to soak up a lot of the anger. I’m not even that big a pot person, but think the laws [...]
