Sketches, one perhaps not so wisely coloured. I’m interested in what dinosaurs looked like, because I have the lumbering old-style beasts still stuck in my head. This Tyrannosaurus has a few feathers, which surprises his mortal enemy, the Triceratops. The cave woman is not period, however. Unless that period is the 1960s.

Then some normal, like, sketches off my balcony.

This is supposed to be Sylvain Chomet, director of the Triplets of Belleville.

Here are some digital and watercolour pictures (and blends of both) that I’ve been doing today, and over the weekend. So many things to tell about these, and there are still challenges, and important things to learn. But what’s most important is that I’m feeling comfy with the tools, and having fun.

This is the exact format I don’t need to work on my new site. Nonetheless, a couple of miscellaneous watercolours I was doodling in my watercolour book. The woman is a Solid Gold Dancer, the height of femininity in the 1980s.

This guy was painted because I took out from the library a book of John Howe paintings for J.R.R. Tolkien stories. When it comes to drawing, I like nasty things and pretty things equally as much.

One thing my recent adventures in digital painting have done, they’ve made my painting in watercolour seem absolutely easy and refreshing by comparision.

Still it’s a great challenge, and I’ve learned plenty in the last little while. As I relax and practice, things will get easier, and the people more natural. I’m not a quick study, like some artists. And I’m not interested in copying photos, or trying to make things as realistic as possible. Hope it all works!

Blotchy, I know, but I’m happy because it’s a sort of successful digital watercolour. Zoe Piel explains the method, and the dozens of switches and settings you have to control. I’m not so good at that, having merely a 20th-century mind. But I managed to upgrade my “Creative Suite” and am learning all the new things I have to learn, to make this as effortless as it’s supposed to look. Next task, learning how to “automate” the more repetitive tasks.

Not sure what to say about this, except it was a bit of work. I described this strip to a twitter friend, now I’ve forgotten her name. Will try to look back and find her.

This always happens when I drop one of those dip pens. It sticks into the floor like a dagger in an Indiana Jones movie. Bye bye nice nib!

Actually painted a portrait of somebody’s baby the other week. Looked nothing like this one, who was just practice for baby paintings. Can’t show the portrait, because it hasn’t been given to the recipient yet.

Then there’s this freaky smiling guy, again rendered in good old-fashioned watercolour.
