I’ve been neglecting my blogging. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been drawing. Working on female faces here, trying to catch what’s special in a face that makes it a particular person. Easier to draw a generic face. But when you can’t get out to sketch real people, which is the best, there are always photographs. The problem with those is they’re static, and essentially someone else’s (the photographer’s) image you’re copying. Still, I feel like I’m increasing in accuracy, while keeping the drawings personal.

One thing that’s interesting is to watch documentaries, and freeze the image. It still belongs to the film, but you’re choosing it. The people below are from a short film about the late director Ken Russell:

Drawing things from DVDs. Freezing it this time, rather than just going on impressions as the movie plays. A lot of work filling things in with pencil! This and the below are based on Sharon Stone from the beginning of Total Recall.

I’m working on my portraiture chops, by drawing some faces out of an old “New York Times Book Review.” Tough to be technically good, and still contain a hint of personality. But that’s why we practice with these kinds of things, isn’t it?

Sorry, they’re not together. Some other time! The guy here is my trying to recapture impressions of this character I saw on the street, who could have been a thug ordered by Central Casting. Don’t think I caught the exact look of malice on his face which unsettled me, though!

Women in pencil, and colour:

Just putting up a lot of things. I’ve been drawing them the past week, scanning. Now they’re backed up a little. So here they are, all at once.

Busy as of late. I’ve been drawing things in the between times, but not really putting them up. Maybe it will even out, but I wonder. Anyhow, here are some more drawings and paintings. Some are sort of from life, some not. I’ll let you guess.

The guy below, in pencil, is roughly inspired by “The King of Real Estate” in the film American Beauty.

In the brush drawing, I’m imagining Wonder Woman’s frumpier, older cousin. I always think that these glamourous types have relatives who are less impressive, and jealous of them.

This is Cyrano de Bergerac. In one of his works, he built himself a pair of wings, and flew to the moon. Gotta love that Cyrano!

Then, just a bunch of random colour sketches of things on the street. I’m happy with these, because I kept the contrast up. Not easy!

UPDATE: I’m only now noticing that the horse has a bit but no bridle. It’s one of those special under-the -tongue bits.

I’m sick and feeling sicker. Nonetheless working hard, and found time to draw this tonight, while watching a creepy TV program. I’ve got other stuff to post on something I did this week, but that will have to wait. Have a good night! Achoo!
