Cats and Files

By in cats

Nora the File Cat

Nora Small Cat ™ has her own filing system, of which she is very proud. Actually, she was unhappy when I sealed away my own files, because she had a habit of shredding them to make a little hideaway. So I made her a decoy box of scrap paper, and she’s happy with that, because she can’t read.

Nora working in her files.

I’m happy, because I also dealt with the piles of paper that were spread everywhere around here threatening to overwhelm. Putting them into one big pile, and then sorting that into easy-to-remember (I hope) categories, which then go into their own folders inside the cabinet.

That’s what we’ve got today.

Mr. Street Black Cat better be careful. We don’t want him to become black cat pizza!

Another weekend

By in sketches, watercolour

p-38L

Just some stuff I drew over the weekend. “Gagnon Fridays” are on hiatus for a bit, as we figure out a new place to meet. I liked the old one, but it takes two to get together. Hope something happens. I enjoyed those.

Rough pic of a P-38 lightning above. Below, these drawings are separate, but they seem to be having an argument.

Drama

By in cats, sketches

tuxling

A dramatic sketch of Nora the kitty. None of the cats are very dramatic at the moment. They’re lying around like plague victims, and it’s not even all that hot. A harbinger of things to come this summer?

Below, another drawing. Kind of an office scene:

Nice Weather Again

By in montreal, sketches, watercolour

bikesplash

Had fun riding my bike the other day. Saw plenty of BIXI rental bicycle stands (there are two within a couple of blocks of me, so there must be a lot — at least here and on the plateau, which is one of Montreal’s more trendy neighbourhoods). And forgot to wear my sunscreen, so got a bit red.

I don’t know what this guy’s excuse is, except I painted him in a splashy, I-don’t-care way as he pedalled by me.

The Wonderful Engine…

By in cats, sketches, watercolour

engine2

This thing looks a little like the power turbines I was writing about in the Power Quest Episode of “What’s That About?” I talk about the show on my site, here: http://mruttan.ca/television.html

Have to get busy and finish the links!

Ballpoint Sketches

By in sketches, watercolour

jack6

I like the feel of a smooth ballpoint in the book. Not the most respected of media, but you can make nice gradated tones with it. I even like them when they blob, but not when they are sluggish, or don’t work so you start carving little ruts in the paper.

This one’s more just black wash on what is perhaps a ballpoint sketch (ballpoint is also waterproof):
allain1

Now this one is brush pen with watercolour, some ball point, maybe even a dip pen (I fooled with it a little over different days. That’s why it’s not such an easy, relaxed-looking drawing, maybe!):
engine2

Little idea what that engine is powering. Reminds me a little of turbines from the “Power Quest” Episode of that show I worked on.

Sketch Paintings

By in sketches, watercolour

gal-gorilla

Couple of half-sketch half paintings. Gal and gorilla. And long haired villain guy below:

hairguy

Tried to get out to the comic jam tonight, but was driven back by the big rain, and a sore knee. Somehow conspiring to be as rotten as possible, when I wanted to get out. I guess that’s called story irony. Still think inanimate objects turn against me.

The Long Haul, Open Studio Weekend

By in montreal

This is something different from my usual run of sketches. The Long Haul, which is a studio in Park Extension I hadn’t heard of before, is having an open house weekend. More here

Park Ex is an interesting neighbourhood, due to the number of immigrants from all over the world living there, plus artsy types. Some very strange re-purposed resto-bars, like low-budget Bladerunner. If I wasn’t living here, I’d certainly want to be there.

Dreads and Garters

Saw this girl this afternoon, walking by. Not so apparent from my brilliant sketch, but she’s wearing thigh-high legwarmers with “Sally Jupiter” garters.

The King is Dead

By in cats, montreal

the King of rue Chapleau

Sorry to report that this brilliant ugly old cat I used to see every day when I walked around the corner has passed on. 21 years old, a full and happy life.

“For in his morning orisons he loves the sun, and the sun loves him.

For he is of the tribe of Tiger.”

Painting at the old port

Thought the above would be rather larger. Maybe I’ll upload it with more detail. It was me painting at the Old Port yesterday, with people on Bixis going by, and old boats.

Funny Faces

By in cats, sketches, watercolour

hat-couple

As I wrote in Twitter, it’s fun painting funny faces early in the morning. I snapped these with the camera rather than scanning them. Below is the purple lady from a couple of posts back. I guess that would be called a “second state” if I were printmaking.

purplehair2

Little Nora wanted her picture taken, too!

P1030741

She seems a little peeved here, actually. I don’t know what goes on in these little furry heads, but usually watch the tail. In Nora’s case it looks tense.
