Getting a little more organised with the vectors. The thing I like about Illustrator is that it’s possible to monkey with lines to an infinite degree. Still plenty to learn, however. Today, I hope to unravel the secrets of the “Gradient Mesh.” Some more traditional stuff below:

Digital World
By Jack Ruttan in men, sketchesSpent this week learning about some tools in Adobe Illustrator. You can’t just go in and start drawing stuff. But I followed some tutorials, and played around a lot. Very frustrating when your drawing vanishes, you can’t apply a certain gradient, or your edges all turn into a cat’s cradle. But I think I finally […]
Lady and Tiger, etc.
By Jack Ruttan in men, sketches, watercolour, womenI think that the simple titles are best for the SEO. (Search Engine Optimization). Not that I really care about how many people visit this, except in terms of raw vanity. I’m doing this mainly for myself, so I can look at it later, and think, “did I really draw THAT?” Sketchbook page, with parts […]

Weekend Things and Technical Challenges
By Jack Ruttan in sketchesBored, painting a lot of pictures on the weekend. Hope some of them are funny/cute. I flattened (physically, not by photoshop) the one above so it would scan more easily. Big operation involving sprayed water and paper tape. You non-watercolourists can read about it here, but it’s really not that labourious, once you have the […]

The Usual Obsessive Stuff
By Jack Ruttan in cats, men, sketches, watercolour, womenThe usual guys blankly staring, cats, and below, cute chicks. Just because I go out to events doesn’t mean I’m not a strange recluse. It just means there are a lot of events happening. But the video stuff is fun. Takes a long time to upload. My next challenge there is finding music I can […]

Expozine 2010
By Jack Ruttan in montrealHappy with how the video turned out, because I didn’t work that hard trying to get every little thing, or even amazing things. Leave that to other chroniclers. This is just my view of the show. I made sketches, which will be posted later, and I might also make an effort at identifying some of […]
Pair of Pairs
By Jack Ruttan in men, watercolour, womenThis is a pair of a pair of things. The only connection is that they happened to be on the same pages with each other. Going to do more street scenes. They’re kind of boring, but when I do them I think of the buildings as having some emotion or attitude. This corner apartment above […]

Back to Jack
By Jack Ruttan in cats, men, paintings, sketches, watercolour, womenFinished with the labour-intensive event chronicling for now, and back to boring little drawings. They don’t attract as many hits! Still, I’m very happy to have started using the Sony Vegas editing program, and mastered at least a few of the basics. (can’t imagine wanting to use many of those tacky special effects and wipes, […]

Les 48 heures de la bande dessinée de Montréal
By Jack Ruttan in montrealI was at the above-named event today. Plenty of cartoonists, plenty of cartoons. A surprise for me, because I didn’t know many of them. The Montreal comics scene is indeed diverse. The first day, Saturday, is devoted to creating strips: cartoonists are paired up to produce these. Sunday is for displaying the finished work to […]

The Rise of the Octo-Moose
By Jack Ruttan in montrealI visited this show last night, at Galerie Monastiraki. Wasn’t really sure what they were doing, whether it was a book, or a show, or what. Turned out to be art. Here are some snapshots: I also made videos where I chatted with the artists. Very pleased that I’ve begun to be able to use […]

Animal Gladiators
By Jack Ruttan in dogs, watercolourThis is a comic I drew in about 10 minutes at the last Comic Jam. Then it took me about 4 days to decide what colours to put in. Enjoy!

Crowded Sketch
By Jack Ruttan in men, sketches, womenLots of scribbly drawing with the roller pen, while watching the American election results on BBC via internet. And with mild dismay, but that’s what happens. Is America going down the tubes? We’ll see.
