These are a pair of characters from the beginning of Tarkovsky’s Solaris, which I am watching in the Criterion edition, graciously leant to me by my sketching friend Rick. I think they’re his production manager and co-writer, which he put into his film because they were lucky for him, and also close at hand.
The film is lots of fun, because it’s arty, Russian, and philosophical, and mainly lo-tech. This drove all the people crazy who wanted a Soviet answer to Kubrick’s very hi-tech and flashy 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s still a good science fiction film, just totally different from what genre fans like.
