Despite the punning title of this post, this isn’t Walt Disney. He’s actually the cartoonist who designed Porky Pig. I’ve forgotten his name at the moment, but watched a bio about him on youtube, where a number of these interesting documentaries can be found, if you know where to look for them. UPDATE: Augh. Okay, […]

By Jack Ruttan in black and white, horses, men, pencil, watercolour, womenI like drawing wreckage, also pretty women. They don’t really go together, except perhaps in a fashion mag.
Digital and Ballpoint Pen Critters (and folk)
By Jack Ruttan in cats, horses, paintings, sketches, womenStill playing with the digital painting. I think I get so carried away with the technical challenge I sometimes forget to make an interesting picture. Hence this horse, not doing much of anything. George Stubbs I am not! Actually, without the “ink” lines, this looks a lot like one of those paint by numbers kits. […]

What’s New in the Sketchbook?
By Jack Ruttan in horses, men, sketches, watercolour, womenOut of My Head….
By Jack Ruttan in horses, men, sketches, womenThat’s where these drawings are from. When winter sets in it’s less practicable to draw things out on the street. So I sit around looking at books, watching DVDs, also drawing anything that tickles my fancy. Hate drawing directly from photographs, but those give you different ideas, and also keeps one closer to reality. So […]

By Jack Ruttan in horses, men, sketchesI’ve finally learned a comic colouring technique that’s relatively fast, and that I’m happy with. Check this series of youtube videos from the Overground Comic Company, if you want to find out more. Meanwhile, I’ve been drawing a stack of things. Neighbourhood Lady and Unicorn
By Jack Ruttan in horses, men, sketches, watercolour, womenI can’t actually claim to have seen this in the parade of people walking by my 2nd-floor balcony, but she was a striking woman, and the dress I gave her inspired me to give her a mythological pal. Too bad about the pumps, which aren’t exactly something Burne-Jones would have added. Below, a more typical […]

F1 Confusion
By Jack Ruttan in horses, montreal, paintings, sketches, watercolourYesterday, I went to check out the Formula 1 Festivities downtown in Montreal. Snapped a few photos, as above. Kind of tiring, the whole thing, so I took a pit stop in Dorchester Square, ate French Fries, and sketched the equestrian monument to the wildly popular Boer War.

More Ballpoint Rambling
By Jack Ruttan in horses, men, sketchesBallpoint pens are fun, and you can kind of get some nice tones happening. Not very archival, I imagine.

Musketeers and Horses
By Jack Ruttan in horses, paintings, sketches, watercolourWhile I was painting these, I was watching the excellent Cyrano de Bergerac movie with Gérard Depardieu. I had the honour of working with Mr. Depardieu, as an extra in the crowd, for the film Nouvelle France. Didn’t see much of him, but he seemed like a real gent.
