There’s a lot more colour outside, now that winter’s finished with. So, it’s lucky that this new little black sketchbook of mine takes colour in it. These are more or less things I drew on the balcony the other day.

Medieval Portraits
By Jack Ruttan in men, sketches, watercolour, womenJust a couple of pics I sketched from a book of French painting from the 14-15th centuries. These are fun. I’ll do more. And maybe some modern ones.

Reading Sketches
By Jack Ruttan in men, sketches, womenI used to go to more literary readings, and at one point had resolved to draw a portrait of every author I had witnessed read. That resolution went by the boards a while ago, but I still draw at readings when the mood takes me. This was from an event called the “Literary Luau” at […]

Watercolour Stuff
By Jack Ruttan in horses, men, watercolourFor some reason I felt it necessary to scan an entire watercolour sketchbook of mine today. It took all day, too. But I’m not putting any of it up, right now. The above is a new painting. I didn’t really finish it, but I seem to like it this way. Maybe later, I’ll add some […]

Add New
By Jack Ruttan in men, sketches, watercolour, womenI’ve been in such a rut lately. Body seems to be failing: odd problems mainly due to stress. Jealous of other, better artists. But drawing these things makes me happy. Guess I’m not going to stop.

Nightmare Puppy Dogs
By Jack Ruttan in dogs, men, watercolour, womenFailed painting. I’m still putting it up here, because it looks vaguely Edvard Munch-like. Reading a how-to-draw book which said that before you draw, you should visualize the head of a cute pet coming through the paper, and draw as if you’re caressing that head. But I just drew the head, added legs and a […]

Bombastic Brush and Ink
By Jack Ruttan in horses, men, sketches, womenThese brush drawings feel bombastic to me. A little quieter now that they’re scanned and put up. Still, that big brush line seems to “yell” more than the spidery pen. Harsh contrasts. The page below is from one of those big books, and it’s hard to cover all that area with the brush. Also, my […]

This Always Happens…
By Jack Ruttan in cats, dogs, men, montreal, sketches, womenI’ve been in a bit of a mood lately, and not posting much. But still drawing things. Some of which are clever, or all right. I’ve actually got 3 comic strips on the go, which I’d like to finish. Those, of course, are all brilliant. We’ll see. In the meantime, because Easter weekend was warm, […]

Big Ugly Face
By Jack Ruttan in men, sketches…that I drew last night when I couldn’t sleep. Don’t know if he helped, but he reflected my mood. I like how the drawings on the back of the paper show through.

Painted Pair
By Jack Ruttan in men, sketches, watercolour, womenI’m happy with this new-fangled green painter’s tape, which is a little less sticky than normal masking tape. But it can be left on, and also comes off without residue. Mind you, it doesn’t make things square for you. You still have to do that yourself.

Things I Saw
By Jack Ruttan in horses, men, sketchesSome of them in my mind. I did see a walking guy with a moustache, and some form of skyline. A Hercules plane flew over, but a James Bond jeep didn’t fall out. I saw Kate Beaton ponies on the web. Guess the figures will now be a valuable collectors item. That’s all for now.
