L’Écho d’un Fleuve

By in montreal

Interesting stuff happening down the street. Last night I wandered into a block party/art show called L’Écho d’un Fleuve (“The Echo of a River”). Took some photos: Please click on one and check the whole set to learn more. I also shot hand-held you-are-there video of a performance: This blog has more on the event, […]

Nice Weather Again

By in montreal, sketches, watercolour

Had fun riding my bike the other day. Saw plenty of BIXI rental bicycle stands (there are two within a couple of blocks of me, so there must be a lot — at least here and on the plateau, which is one of Montreal’s more trendy neighbourhoods). And forgot to wear my sunscreen, so got […]

The Long Haul, Open Studio Weekend

By in montreal

This is something different from my usual run of sketches. The Long Haul, which is a studio in Park Extension I hadn’t heard of before, is having an open house weekend. More here Park Ex is an interesting neighbourhood, due to the number of immigrants from all over the world living there, plus artsy types. […]

Dreads and Garters

By in montreal, sketches

Saw this girl this afternoon, walking by. Not so apparent from my brilliant sketch, but she’s wearing thigh-high legwarmers with “Sally Jupiter” garters.

The King is Dead

By in cats, montreal

Sorry to report that this brilliant ugly old cat I used to see every day when I walked around the corner has passed on. 21 years old, a full and happy life. “For in his morning orisons he loves the sun, and the sun loves him. For he is of the tribe of Tiger.”

Painting at the old port

By in cats, montreal, sketches, watercolour

Thought the above would be rather larger. Maybe I’ll upload it with more detail. It was me painting at the Old Port yesterday, with people on Bixis going by, and old boats. Below, Nora small cat gets avant-garde:

The King of Rue Chapleau

By in cats, montreal, ruttan's place

I’ve seen this cat every morning for years now, when I walk up rue Chapleau to the corner store at Hochelaga to get a banana or a beer. His owner called him “The King” once, so he’s the King of the block. Getting on in years now (think he’s about 16-18 years old), but still […]

Back to Drawing

By in montreal, ruttan's place, sketches

A car that’s sort of a 1950s Cadillac, though not exactly, and a guy from the street. I was working hard today. Had time to sketch these on the sunny deck. The women are back playing baseball in the diamond near here. They’re loud, but not unwelcome.

Houde and Duplessis

By in montreal, sketches

Two Quebec personalities from the glory days of Montreal. Maurice Duplessis (right corner), Quebec’s frightening Premier from times of yore, is laughing at a joke from the Mayor, Camillien Houde. What project is this about? Wouldn’t you like to know!

Maple Trees in Bloom, and small cat ™

By in cats, montreal, ruttan's place

This person I’m doing work for was very impressed with the maple trees along my street. So I thought I’d post a snap. All of this yellow-green is blossoms, which will fall soon, and carpet the sidewalk. Already I can hear the vroom of the street vacuum buggies prowling the sidewalks to pick it up. […]

The Sign is Gone!!

By in montreal, ruttan's place

Exactly 24 hours and seven minutes after I took the previous photo in this series, and then came out after school let out to shoot the progress of the sign’s destruction, this is what greeted me. An empty fence. No trace of the sign: no shreds of plastic board anywhere nearby, not even loose attachments […]

Look Out for Speeding Kiddies

By in montreal, ruttan's place

Consider if you will, an experiment. The police put up this safety sign this afternoon on the schoolyard fence across the street from me. I want to see how long it takes before the pristine surface is defaced with graffiti of some kind, or torn down entirely. You can watch and keep track with me. […]

Balcony Sketches

By in montreal, sketches

It was fine weather earlier this week. So I sat on my balcony, read, and drew a few sketches of the passing scene in my small (5.5″x8.5″) sketch book. Good times! And more nice weather is coming this weekend. Yay!
