De Rouen Street and schoolyard

By in montreal, paintings, ruttan's place, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

More quick paintings, dashed off on my deck. The Schoolyard, with children. Not trying to put them down, I think they capture something, but one is always hard on one’s own work. This one below I did this morning, I’m not so fond of. I’ll let you judge whether you like it or not. Thinking […]

Digital Portraits

By in black and white, digital, heads, paintings

I watched this Youtube video, and it actually gave me some inspiration in terms of portraits from photographs. I drew these three in about an hour, not trying to censor myself, but paying attention to edges, and the placement of things.

A Need to Relax

By in ballpoint pen, digital, paintings, women

It’s actually been a trying time lately. But I’m happy with where these are going. Strange that the cross-hatching looks good, but I rarely use it on watercolours. Feel like it’s cheating, in the same way as a lot of these computer tools I’m using. I think this stems back to when my late mom […]

Digital Dallyance

By in color, digital, men, paintings, sketches, women

I’m happier now with how the digital painting has been going. As I’ve been writing there are a lot of controls and switches to master, plus the stylus has a different feeling than a pencil, and is less precise (at least in my hands). But practice is helping, plus the memory of colour mixing for […]

Random Painting

By in color, machines, men, paintings, watercolour, women

Looking through a closet, I found a block of watercolour paper with a few sheets on it. Painted this, while watching a documentary on the late Gerry Anderson — whose shows and spaceships were all over my childhood. The paper was very strange and spongey — hard to get detail onto it. Also, one’s paintings, […]

Digital Painting is Tough

By in color, digital, heads, paintings, sketches, women

I don’t know if it’s wise to put one’s trials up, but this is a blog about process, and I try to put up most of what I draw. Actually, I know I’ve been rather sporadic lately, and will try to remedy that. Still, digital painting in Photoshop is a fascinating process, even though the […]

Digital Doodling

By in color, digital, paintings, sketches

I’ve been doing a lot of work with my digital art, in Photoshop, with a stylus. Not as much control over the lines and strokes yet, as with more traditional media. But it’s coming along. Still, I’m shy of putting them up, because not many of them are “ready for Prime time,” at least in […]

Watercolour Women

By in black and white, color, heads, paintings, pencil, watercolour, women

Been painting sometimes strange watercolour portraits of women. Going for pretty more than scary, but they’re all interesting, at least. Plus, a bonus pencil drawing of a little boy, from the front cover of VOIR newsweekly:

Maisonneuve Library

This is a gift for a friend. A little painting of the Maisonneuve Library, in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Montreal.

Guys, and a Dancer

By in color, heads, men, paintings, watercolour, women

Above was copied from an old photo. I feel they get too tight when done that way. Want to loosen up some. And all the people below are looking in the same direction. Watercolour is more unforgiving than pencil (big discovery!) Still, I enjoy doing all the shading. Strong darks and lights help a lot.

Warmer Times

By in color, men, paintings, sketches, watercolour, women

The above was sketched on my friend’s verandah, when it was warmer, and possible to do such things. Below is more stuff from my head, and out of one of my books.

Alien Attack

By in paintings, watercolour, women

This is a fun painting I did on a theme I was thinking about earlier.
