Going to try to do slightly more exciting things than these. But the computer painting is working not so badly.
Pencil Drawings
By Jack Ruttan in black and white, pencilThe building is from a book called “Forgotten Architecture” and is a brewery in Baltimore, Maryland. Would be interesting to see if it is still standing. Not a lot of fun to draw, however. Still, I want to do more architecture and machines.
Even though I drew it in brown pencil, it scanned dark, so I tweaked the colours. I’ll use straight lines next time, and better perspective, but I like the wiggly.

By Jack Ruttan in color, Coloured Pencils, dinosaurs, sketchesI love dinosaurs. Always have. Still, I’m trying to keep up with current thought on what they looked like, and not just redraw old images that probably didn’t exist. I like the idea that even the carnivorous ones were probably not monsters, but animals out in the wild.
Also, during my summer I worked at the Calgary zoo, I spent some time looking at the raptors (that’s carnivorous birds: hawks, eagles and owls), and the cassowary. That one was an intimidating creature, and it’s fun to think of that beast while trying to re-think dinosaurs.
Unfortunately, I drew a horse head too close in the corner (these sketchbooks are getting cramped!) But there you are.
Will have to do more research, anyhow. These are also interesting to me as ways of messing with colour schemes, and underpainting, to make the pictures look more vivid and bright.
Eccentric Paintings of People and Pets
By Jack Ruttan in cats, color, dogs, paintings, parks, sketches, watercolor, watercolourI’m not fond of the new way Flickr has of embedding one’s graphics. I just want you to be able to see the one image, not scroll along to a lot of others.
Generally, I’ve been embedding them into the website, which is probably a better solution, but I worry about all those graphics piling up and taking room. Still, a few posts earlier on have gone blank (the link somehow changed) and I’m not sure at all about my whole older blog on blogger. May try to get that one back, if I can “export” it. Websites are such a pain.
But I am updating my portfolio to show my web work, so there you go.
The 2014 Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec Garlic Festival is Coming
By Jack Ruttan in black and white, color, Coloured Pencils, ruttan's place, sketches, watercolor, watercolour, womenThis is my T-shirt design for the 2014 Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue Quebec Garlic Festival. That event will happen next week, August 23, 2014. Finally saw the design in print last night at the get-together for volunteers. This happened at a pretty little place called the Coop du Grand Orme.
Snaps of things are below. The band is Caroline Racicot and co. Did some sketches while I was there. You can see them after the photos.
This is the T-Shirt in action, on Daniel, the founder of the Garlic Fest. Next to him is Patti, who helps organise things, and roped me in.
Here I am receiving the plaudits of the crowd, for my fine work.
The band inside.
The waterway, part of the Saint Laurence.
My sketch of the band, with watercolour pencils.
Later scribble of the guitar player, in pen, without pencil to help!
Patti’s awesome helper, Naomie.
