As the artist promised, Sherwin Tjia has sent me this sketch of a cat. The postman folded it, of course, but I am flattening it out.
Hey Look, It’s Me!
By Jack Ruttan in digital, ruttan's place, sketchesI wasn’t liking how in the other paintings the hair seemed to have little to do with the rest of the face, so here’s a try in the direction of dealing with that. One also has to pay attention to colours. I like the impressionistic thing, and the brush marks. Those are made with very big brushes, or at least scaled up in the Photoshop.
An Improbable Prehistoric Scene
By Jack Ruttan in digital, dinosaurs, paintings, womenCar, Car C-A-R
By Jack Ruttan in digital, paintingsSomething I used to chant as a little one, for whatever reason. Painted this to go into the background of another picture, but spent so much time on it (learned a lot, however), that I decided to clip it out and blow it up. I seem to be having better luck with inorganic objects than the living ones. I can also work on the colour contrasts, and getting textures in. Still, not unhappy with this and its cuteness.

Paper or Pixels?
By Jack Ruttan in digital, men, paintings, watercolour, womenOne thing my recent adventures in digital painting have done, they’ve made my painting in watercolour seem absolutely easy and refreshing by comparision.
Still it’s a great challenge, and I’ve learned plenty in the last little while. As I relax and practice, things will get easier, and the people more natural. I’m not a quick study, like some artists. And I’m not interested in copying photos, or trying to make things as realistic as possible. Hope it all works!
Sketch Blogging Again
By Jack Ruttan in digital, paintings, pen and inkThings I’ve doing, and neglecting to put up. Pen and ink while watching a biography of the late Jean Giraud (Moebius). (Now taken down, sorry!) Admire his work greatly, but the whole “genius” tone of the doc was hard to deal with. Still, these people are giants in their field, and it’s not as easy to hold together as an hour-long film might imply.
My digital work at least has the virtue of making my watercolour stuff look not all that bad. More whites are needed, perhaps. I put that blue in the corner just as a way of trying the pen, and it improved the picture greatly.
Digital Watercolour
By Jack Ruttan in digital, paintings, watercolourBlotchy, I know, but I’m happy because it’s a sort of successful digital watercolour. Zoe Piel explains the method, and the dozens of switches and settings you have to control. I’m not so good at that, having merely a 20th-century mind. But I managed to upgrade my “Creative Suite” and am learning all the new things I have to learn, to make this as effortless as it’s supposed to look. Next task, learning how to “automate” the more repetitive tasks.
Depressing Comics
By Jack Ruttan in sketchesI was going through old stuff yesterday, looking for something I didn’t find (thought it was in the paper files, but I think rather it’s on the computer). Still, it helps to get to know your files. I still have trouble finding things I’m working on when it goes inside a drawer. Perhaps my drawers lead into some other universe where things are forgotten. Much easier going through a pile of paper. But the paper piles were getting too high ….
Anyhow, I found the originals of these two comics, from a period in my life when I was much more miserable than I am now. I like the ink style, however. I think they’ve both been blogged before, but I don’t remember them, and you may not either.
The first one, from my time in hospital, basically suffering from stress, is self-explanatory. But who is the guy below? He looks like CBC’s Michael Enright, or a character from Daniel Clowes Ice Haven.
BTW, he’s supposed to be in the bath in that lower right panel.
I would play with darks and lights more in the final panel, but best just to leave it and create something new.

Old Lady and Her Cat
By Jack Ruttan in pen and ink, womenI was going through an avalanche of old stuff today, trying to get organised. Found a lot of old things I at least don’t remember well, so I’m posting them. Well, this pen and ink of an old lady and cat (pretty big in the original, something like 14″x17″. Look cool. I don’t remember putting this much work into a single image before, except for some of those paintings.
