Portrait

By in sketches, watercolour, women

portrait1book4g

I painted this in about 4 minutes from a photo. Wish all my painting was this easy, but if I just did this all the time, I’d get bored. That’s why I tackle the complex things which are just out of my reach. Later I’ll probably find something wrong with this one, too.

Back to School

By in men, sketches, watercolour, women

colorcreeps-2booki

One advantage of this time of year for cheap writer/artists is that there are plenty of “back to school” sales on stationery and art supplies. So, I’ve stocked up on cool sketchbooks. The above creeps are from a new hardcover one, which has paper that’s nice for watercolour. But it’s hard to scan, with that binding.

Monochrome Crew

By in men, sketches, women

blackgoauachebook#49

It’s fun blogging at quarter to six in the morning. Had nothing better to do, but this was queued up, and ready to go. I think it’s more fun (but more work) telling stories with these people, because they’re all about stories.

However, they just appear as I draw/paint them. I don’t sit down saying I’m going to paint a picture of a couple of guys pointing, with a ghost chick in the background. It sort of evolves.

Canson “Mix Media” (sic) Sketchbook

By in cats, watercolour, women

orangecatbook#24

This kitty was painted in my book, the make of which is in the title, and about which I was complaining to another artist about because it likes to absorb and lighten dark watercolour paint.

I’m too cheap to buy a better book, and frankly, haven’t found one at a reasonable price. It’s not so bad for ballpoint pen, as below, and I might try colouring this, sometime later.

More Women

By in sketches

woman3book#26

These are a lot of drawings of women, of different shapes and sizes. I know representation of women is a loaded topic, and maybe you can’t win, but I enjoy playing with it, and always working on the craft.

Below, she’s a more typical idealised “comic book type,” actually copied from the book How_to_Draw_Comics_the_Marvel_Way.” I actually can’t do that, but it’s a fun and not un-useful book. Gift of a couple of comics pals of mine.

Page O’ Things

By in sketches, watercolour, women

page-o-things

This isn’t the most recent thing I’ve been working on, but it’s more of that yellow underpainting (or “glazing”) as it’s called. Have a lot of ideas for comic strips, which take a while to do. I hope you’ll see them soon!

Working on drawing famous people also, or at least portraits that look like who they’re supposed to be. Not so much success here, so I’m not putting them up. Also, dealing with the cat and vet has affected this week.

Neighbourhood Lady and Unicorn

I can’t actually claim to have seen this in the parade of people walking by my 2nd-floor balcony, but she was a striking woman, and the dress I gave her inspired me to give her a mythological pal. Too bad about the pumps, which aren’t exactly something Burne-Jones would have added.

Below, a more typical morning jogger:

Ruttan family ephemera -E.H. Ruttan and Son General Store, Hardisty, Packing Tape.

I wanted to share a family heirloom, a roll of gummed paper packing tape from my Great Grandfather’s General Store in Hardisty, Alberta. It dates from about the depression (not the current one, I mean about 1932-33), and is slightly stuck together from the gum, but I’ve unrolled a little as you see.

Nice phone numbers, back then!

Read about my family history, and Hardisty Alberta on my website here.

Been painting a lot of stuff, but want to focus on the comics. That doesn’t mean these will stop, anytime soon. I’m just putting it up!

Cheerful Misanthropy Comic

By in paintings, watercolour

Not-true1

I like children, but have seen a lot of complainers, and put-upon moms. This one wasn’t written as much as it sort of fell out of my subconscious. I’m uncomfortable about it (hence the title), but it’s just paint and paper.

Painting comics like this seems to take about as long as drawing them in ink for me. And next time I’ll use better paper, rather than just drawing in my sketchbook. That’s not a promise though. But I want to draw more comics, featuring whatever or whomever.
