More Gag Panels

By in Uncategorized

panel-gags1

I think there are more, but I can’t find them. Should have pretended I was reprinting them from some long-dead Men’s or Family magazine.

And this popped up on Twitter just as I was writing this post, and I can’t resist: http://mikelynchcartoons.blogspot.com/2011/01/saturday-evening-post-scrapbook-part-24.html

Gag Cartoons 1

By in Uncategorized

panel-gags2

I wrote and drew a few gag cartoons, which my pal Rick Gagnon inked in his usual impeccable way. We submitted them to Reader’s Digest, who wasn’t bowled over, so they found a home in Rick’s zine, and now are here on the web.

Jeff Leblanc did the masthead. Hey, I was aiming for humour in a slightly retro vein. Well, no cannibalism or bloody sacrifice at least, like some of the other comics in Rick’s mag.

Metro Colour

By in men, sketches, watercolour, women

metro-colour

Still really haven’t gotten the blog back on its wheels since the holiday break. I have a host of excuses! Mainly busy with work and stuff. But there are some interesting things coming up! That’s if I’m not distracted by twitter, or doing meaningless graphics in illustrator. Happy to be making at least a little money, however.

The above are ballpoint pen sketches of people on the Montreal Metro, which I coloured-in last night, in bed, actually.

Coffee

By in Uncategorized

coffee

Today’s strip is called “Coffee.” I think it was inspired by this machine at the Ontario Science Centre, that said the word “coffee,” and you could alter the inflection by turning a knob so that it sounded like a question. I wonder if that machine is still around?

This was originally published in my friend Rick Gagnon’s zine, WTF??

Cats and the Creative Process

Here’s another of those old strips of mine. Worked on at the comic jam, mainly by Rick Gagnon, over my scribbly pencils. Hence the odd faces here and there. Still funny, though.

I’m running out of these, but have a few more tricks up my sleeve before I’ll have to start drawing stuff again.

Mistake Boy

Another old comic. I was in a bad mood when I did this one. Sarcasm helps.

Social Darwinism

darwinism

Another old comic from 1994 or so. More completely inked by Gagnon, but this was before he had completely figured out my style, I think.

I’ll do more new comics, I promise!

That Whistling Guy

By in Uncategorized

whistling-man1

I’ve been taking it slow over the holidays. Not doing too much. A lot of pencil drawings on scrap paper I’m not going to bother to scan. Getting back into working on things, though.

One part of that effort was to go into my archives, and rescue some old strips which might be good, but haven’t seen the light of day. The above was something I wrote and mainly drew. My pal Rick Gagnon added some shading. Always darkening, that Rick, but always for the better!

This was done in the very old Montreal Comic Jam, orgaized by Rupert Bottenberg, and held at the now-defunct Stornaway Gallery in downtown Montreal. I’ve got a few more of these.

More little Pics

I like ones with background detail better. But a pal of mine said I like to clutter things up. That’s all right.

Little Watercolour Drawings

I made a grid on a piece of watercolour paper with the tape, and drew these cool little paintings. Yay!

Teen Car

By in ruttan's place, sketches

bobcat

Watching Gran Torino with an old Clint Eastwood put me in mind of my teen car. Much less impressive. Built a scale model of it, which I’ve kept on a shelf, and you can see on my tumblr space here.

It was a 1974 Mercury Bobcat, not a Pinto. That’s about all I want to write about, for the moment. I’m in a grouchy mood.

Creepy Guys

By in men, watercolour

dream1

Couple of uncomfortable paintings. The one above is a figure from a dream I had, based, I think, on a rock video featuring a mummy wrapped in duct tape.

Below, it’s this guy I found annoying at a bar. Don’t know how much annoyingness comes through in the picture. Usually, it’s softened a lot, but I can’t always judge how other people are hit by things of mine!

Christmas Card 2010

By in cats

tree12

Got this printed up and sent out, so I feel like I can “share” it now. Noting that other illustrators are doing more than one design. But aside from maybe painting a quick neighbourhood snowscape that’s it for me.

Took me a while, because the challenge I set for myself was to learn more about Adobe Illustrator. Doing this helped a lot, and I’m quicker, and confident with all those pens and brushes, and tools. Still messing with things.

Of course, there’s still more I can do with this: add shadows, correct little lines. But, I’ll move on now. Happy with how it turned out.

And it looks pretty in real life. Measures 4 by 5 inches.

Subways

By in men, sketches, women

Not posting much, I’m afraid. But I’m getting into drawing while I’m waiting for the metro, as these sketches suggest. The first one, done a while ago, I don’t think I put up:

The second one was just yesterday, after returning home from an event. What great worn out and diverse faces you can find there!
