Been drawing a lot in pencil since I’ve started working on digital painting. Unfortunately, not much of the digital is ready for Prime Time (even here, where I often publish imperfect work!). But it is improving mightily, so I might be showing you some less than totally misbegotten images in the future. Part of the […]

Hospital Waiting
By Jack Ruttan in ballpoint pen, black and white, cats, heads, horses, men, pen and ink, sketches, womenSketches done at the Hôtel Dieu Hospital, in the tiny waiting room in the endoscopy ward. My friend checked out OK, but it was a tough few hours waiting. Happyily, I had my book, (TOO MUCH HAPPINESS by Alice Munro), and my sketchbook. No one asked me what I was doing, thank goodness. Not all […]
No One Visits the Blog on Sunday
By Jack Ruttan in ballpoint pen, black and white, men, pencil, sketches, womenThis is true. But I am moved to put up some silly ballpoint pen and pencil drawings I’ve done. Enjoying the more complex scenes these days, and will do a few of these in colour, and digital, which I am fooling around with.
Guys, and a Dancer
By Jack Ruttan in color, heads, men, paintings, watercolour, womenAbove was copied from an old photo. I feel they get too tight when done that way. Want to loosen up some. And all the people below are looking in the same direction. Watercolour is more unforgiving than pencil (big discovery!) Still, I enjoy doing all the shading. Strong darks and lights help a lot.
Further Watercolour Heads
By Jack Ruttan in color, heads, men, sketches, watercolour, womenMaybe I should be doing other things, but I enjoy doing these. Looks like Sophia Loren and the Gangnam Style guy:
Warmer Times
By Jack Ruttan in color, men, paintings, sketches, watercolour, womenThe above was sketched on my friend’s verandah, when it was warmer, and possible to do such things. Below is more stuff from my head, and out of one of my books.
Another New Sketchbook
By Jack Ruttan in black and white, brush pen, men, pencil, sketches, womenWhen I feel down, unlike people who buy a pair of shoes, I sometimes get one of these babies. Doesn’t take long to fill those rather small pages. The black Koh-i-Noor stick is nice, too. Hooray for seasonal sales at the art or stationery store! Terrible stuff to watch, last night, on the “Tube” (Youtube, […]
Spike Milligan & Maggie Smith
By Jack Ruttan in black and white, men, pencil, sketches, womenBack to Watercolour
By Jack Ruttan in color, dogs, horses, men, sketches, watercolour, womenFeels so relaxing painting in watercolours after all this digital staring into the screen thing. I also enjoy painting animals and backgrounds, not to mention plants. So maybe that means some real painting at last. It’s hard to find time for that, though. This sketching I do is mainly therapeutic. Beats punching a wall and […]
More Heads, and Trees
By Jack Ruttan in black and white, cats, color, dogs, heads, men, pen and ink, ruttan's place, sketches, womenI’m getting back into the thing of posting what I drew lately, as long as it’s not too dreadful. It’s been hard for me lately, because I’ve been trying new things, and am not totally comfortable with them. Or even convinced that I should be trying them and not doing things more useful. But life […]
Where Have You Been?
By Jack Ruttan in black and white, men, pencil, sketches, womenMainly drawing heads, in pencil: Haven’t felt much like sharing. I’ve been working on things like digital painting in Photoshop, creating websites with Dreamweaver, and also studying a method created by Andrew Loomis in the 1940s for drawing heads accurately. Using guidelines always makes my work stiffer and more wooden, and I’ve been working on […]
Walter Colours
By Jack Ruttan in cats, color, horses, men, sketches, watercolour, womenDespite the punning title of this post, this isn’t Walt Disney. He’s actually the cartoonist who designed Porky Pig. I’ve forgotten his name at the moment, but watched a bio about him on youtube, where a number of these interesting documentaries can be found, if you know where to look for them. UPDATE: Augh. Okay, […]
Monstrous Stuff
By Jack Ruttan in ballpoint pen, black and white, men, sketchesI love (and fear) monsters, so draw them a lot. The above (“Jasconius the Friendly Whale”) has little to do with Saint Brendan, except it’s something I drew remembering a National Geographic Society map of his voyages. The real story is different. More ball-point pen-drawn monsters below, and a guy. Stories are long-winded, so I’ll […]
