Anthropomorpic Rabbit and Bike.

By in ballpoint pen, color, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

Watercolour and black ballpoint. I think this character is my “Rabbit” from the comic strips I used to do.

Eastern

By in color, Gouache, heads, paintings, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

I really hope that the little art shop in Chinatown near Clarke Street has survived. I like independent shops more than the big chains. Found cool stuff there, such as this book, and that brush. This is actually a face I did years ago, in black gouache, and just added colour to, today.

More sketchbookery

By in ballpoint pen, cats, Coloured Pencils, pencil, sketches, watercolor, women

Pictures done from reference are more “realistic,” but not as much fun to draw as more cartoony things. I sort of adore the way ballpoint pens “blob.” Other artists wipe the point, I think, in between doing cross-hatching lines.

Watercolour Boy

By in color, paintings, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

I saved my blog today. It’s a little bit dated, and I’ve got to go through and prune the links on the left hand side. But I’m still carrying on!

Moose

By in watercolor, watercolour

Back into watercolours. They’ll get better, I promise! Will use reference next time. Gee, there seems to be no shortcuts when it comes to stretching paper. I tried a lot of them, and no thanks. Paper tape and staples do the job.

Hot Lemonade

By in paintings, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

This is kind of cute, and seasonal. I’ve forgotten where it appeared, or what things were supposed to have gone wrong.

Various Pages

By in ballpoint pen, black and white, color, Coloured Pencils, heads, machines, paintings, pencil, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

It’s hard thinking of witty titles for these things. I’m putting up more pages. Not the stuff I did the other night when I couldn’t sleep. That was weird and also messy.

Neon Gel Pens

By in ballpoint pen, color, paintings, pencil, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

Over the past couple of summers, a depanneur (convenience store, for you non-Montrealers) had a jar of gel pens for sale. When I was buying beer or cat food, if I was feeling flush, I’d pick one up. They are fun to play with, and I had a set of kid’s fluorescent paints to […]

Blatant Sketchbookery

By in cats, color, Coloured Pencils, Gouache, Jack's House of Cats, paintings, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

For some reason I’m back into the blog. I don’t think anyone goes here, and the “Blogoshphere” has become a little like one of those abandoned theme parks adventurers like to seek out. Anyhow, I’m baaaaaakk. Not posting as much as I used to, just cool stuff out of the sketchbooks, which are taking too […]

A Comic. By Me.

By in color, comics, digital, watercolor

Life has been tough, lately, and I’ve not been doing some things I should have been doing. I don’t know if comics is one of them, but lots of illustrators are doing them. And if I call myself a writer/slash illustrator, then that’s a natural. But it’s not very renumerative. I started drawing digitally, got […]

Short Pencil

By in Art Criticism, color, Gouache, ruttan's place, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

I don’t actually prefer a short pencil, I just get a little hysterical when the lead breaks off inside the pencil when I’m trying to sharpen it. I hate that.

Magical Neon

By in ballpoint pen, color, pen and ink, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

This is a page I drew this summer with the help of magical neon gel pens I collected at the depanneur over the weeks, at a dollar a pop. I still haven’t figured out how to incorporate them into serious drawings (if that’s what I do), or know if they are archival quality.
