Politics aside, for some reason I had to draw the local Liberal Party Candidate. (I feel like my face drawing is progressing) I’m actually most likely voting Green, or for the lady with the moustache.

Cosplayer
By Jack Ruttan in color, digital, heads, womenI love drawing different types of people. So boring always the same colour of skin. Doing these things fast and furiously seems to help. I may actually fix them later.
Some Anonymous Woman
By Jack Ruttan in color, digital, womenI’m getting used to the idea that most of my drawings not done from a photograph will be slightly cockeyed and spidery. Still adventuring in the digital realm, however. For better or worse.
A Need to Relax
By Jack Ruttan in ballpoint pen, digital, paintings, womenIt’s actually been a trying time lately. But I’m happy with where these are going. Strange that the cross-hatching looks good, but I rarely use it on watercolours. Feel like it’s cheating, in the same way as a lot of these computer tools I’m using. I think this stems back to when my late mom […]
Digital Dallyance
By Jack Ruttan in color, digital, men, paintings, sketches, womenI’m happier now with how the digital painting has been going. As I’ve been writing there are a lot of controls and switches to master, plus the stylus has a different feeling than a pencil, and is less precise (at least in my hands). But practice is helping, plus the memory of colour mixing for […]
Random Painting
By Jack Ruttan in color, machines, men, paintings, watercolour, womenLooking through a closet, I found a block of watercolour paper with a few sheets on it. Painted this, while watching a documentary on the late Gerry Anderson — whose shows and spaceships were all over my childhood. The paper was very strange and spongey — hard to get detail onto it. Also, one’s paintings, […]
Digital Painting is Tough
By Jack Ruttan in color, digital, heads, paintings, sketches, womenI don’t know if it’s wise to put one’s trials up, but this is a blog about process, and I try to put up most of what I draw. Actually, I know I’ve been rather sporadic lately, and will try to remedy that. Still, digital painting in Photoshop is a fascinating process, even though the […]
Cross-Hatchery
By Jack Ruttan in ballpoint pen, black and white, cats, color, digital, pen and ink, pencil, womenThese are almost automatic drawings I do, while watching movies on the DVD machine, or petting cats. Cross-hatching is fun for me, but there’s almost no end to it. You simply have to stop, rather than declare something finished. The bonus this time is a little coloured cat picture:
Watercolour Women
By Jack Ruttan in black and white, color, heads, paintings, pencil, watercolour, womenBeen painting sometimes strange watercolour portraits of women. Going for pretty more than scary, but they’re all interesting, at least. Plus, a bonus pencil drawing of a little boy, from the front cover of VOIR newsweekly:
Steve Luxton at the Atwater Library
By Jack Ruttan in ballpoint pen, black and white, men, montreal, pen and ink, ruttan's place, sketches, women, writingYears ago, I had the notion that I would make a drawing of every author or poet I heard read, and make some sort of collection. That pledge went by the boards years ago, but I still enjoy drawing people at readings. Not even necessarily the reader. Also the people listening, if I can sit […]
Sketches of Dancers, Cars, and more heads.

By Jack Ruttan in black and white, men, pencil, sketches, womenWell, these are fun to draw!
Further Pencil Outpourings
By Jack Ruttan in black and white, heads, men, pencil, sketches, womenI have lots of little drawings but putting them all up in one post would be overkill. So today here are pages from my big, long sketchbook (well, 9″x12″ — but that’s pretty long). Usually when I scan something I slide a piece of blank paper underneath, but this time I wanted to see the […]
Pencil-lations.
By Jack Ruttan in black and white, men, pencil, sketches, womenBeen drawing a lot in pencil since I’ve started working on digital painting. Unfortunately, not much of the digital is ready for Prime Time (even here, where I often publish imperfect work!). But it is improving mightily, so I might be showing you some less than totally misbegotten images in the future. Part of the […]
