Sorry to report that this brilliant ugly old cat I used to see every day when I walked around the corner has passed on. 21 years old, a full and happy life. “For in his morning orisons he loves the sun, and the sun loves him. For he is of the tribe of Tiger.”

Funny Faces
By Jack Ruttan in cats, sketches, watercolourAs I wrote in Twitter, it’s fun painting funny faces early in the morning. I snapped these with the camera rather than scanning them. Below is the purple lady from a couple of posts back. I guess that would be called a “second state” if I were printmaking. Little Nora wanted her picture taken, too! […]

The King of Rue Chapleau
By Jack Ruttan in cats, montreal, ruttan's placeI’ve seen this cat every morning for years now, when I walk up rue Chapleau to the corner store at Hochelaga to get a banana or a beer. His owner called him “The King” once, so he’s the King of the block. Getting on in years now (think he’s about 16-18 years old), but still […]

Maple Trees in Bloom, and small cat ™
By Jack Ruttan in cats, montreal, ruttan's placeThis person I’m doing work for was very impressed with the maple trees along my street. So I thought I’d post a snap. All of this yellow-green is blossoms, which will fall soon, and carpet the sidewalk. Already I can hear the vroom of the street vacuum buggies prowling the sidewalks to pick it up. […]

Back to Gagnon Fridays
By Jack Ruttan in cats, sketchesIt’s good to see Rick Gagnon again, at our traditional Friday afternoon meet at the Cock N’ Bull for drawing and chat. We missed last week, and then I put this post off until today, because of all the class action excitement. But here we are again, with another batch of fun drawings. Below, can […]

Further Monster Cats, and Things.
By Jack Ruttan in cats, watercolourThis is Nekko Dekko, the protector of Honshu. Below, a couple of people in red: You’d think it would be easier, painting two pictures on the same piece of paper at the same time. Saves effort stretching it, and all that. But it’s too easy to splatter dark blobs of paint around, and therefore not […]

Alarming Alien Cats
By Jack Ruttan in cats, sketchesThe “They Live!” alien family who put up the lost cat poster in yesterday’s drawing got their pet back. This has made their gruesome little daughter especially happy. When they’re not telling earth people to “OBEY” and “CONSUME,” this couple collects cats from different worlds. Below, the “Alien ™” cat has forged an alliance with […]

More Fridays
By Jack Ruttan in cats, sketches, watercolourMore Friday evening stuff, back at the bar. Above is a drawing by Marr which I watercoloured, and dressed up the people to make a 1960s scene, like I remember from Yorkville, Toronto’s glory days. Below is sort of by all three of us. I did two characters, Marr did a character (on the left), […]

Sick
By Jack Ruttan in cats, sketchesI’ve been that way for the last couple of days, so lacked the energy to do very much. Feeling better today, so I thought I’d post some stuff. Tried taking snaps of it rather than scanning. Just some drawing I’ve been doing affected by things I’ve been reading and watching. The girl cats are enjoying […]

Watercolour Things
By Jack Ruttan in cats, sketches, watercolourA little at sixes and sevens this weekend, and drawing helps me relax. I’m not going to identify the pair up above, because fans of celebrities on the internet are sometimes crazy, and will go to silly lengths being rude trying to preserve their imaginary relationships with their idols. I might tell you more stories […]

They Carried on Without me!
By Jack Ruttan in cats, sketchesI was pretty tired last night, so I retired early from the bar. My friends stuck around, but were soon chased away by the band setting up. They, however, went down the hill to R. Gagnon’s place, and kept drawing. Rick sent me evidence via e-mail of what happened. This looks like Rick a bit, […]
