I’ve called her “mom,” but don’t know her.

Bought a couple of different size of roller pens at the Oiseau Bleu art store in East Montreal. It’s one of the last independent art stores in the city, now that Art Tec on Bleury and Sherbrooke is closing, or so I hear. Darn. Omer des Serres has good prices on things, sometimes, but it’s swallowed up everything.

I like this pair. It’s a music teacher and his student. The background is what you get if you mess your paint around after applying it to dry paper. I’m often frustrated in trying to get a smooth perfect wash, but find this sort of thing much more interesting to look at.

Another drawing by Gagnon from last Friday evening, which I inked today. He has a large comic and original comic art collection, and knowledge of styles and inking patterns I can only guess at. Those trees, rocks, and puffs of smoke, and that Jack Kirby-ish machinery, for instance. He also likes big heads in containers.

Back to the bar, with Rick and Marr. Again, Marr did some drawings in his own little sketchbook, but I didn’t get snaps. Rick and I drew heads. Above is werewolf Orson Welles, by me, inked by Rick. Below, Leonard Cohen-like bar guy, drawn by Rick and inked my me. But I did that later, when I got back home.
I’m sure there’s something we did that I’ve missed and I’ll find later. Below is a little drawing of Rick’s that I inked. We were actually arguing about each other’s art. Marr was leaving, and probably thinking we would come to blows. But we were soon very jolly together, drawing away, and having a good old time.

Still been sick and busy. Plus, my little cat is at the vet’s getting her tubes tied, or ripped out (whatever they do to spay little cats). So not much on the sketch front, outside of this.
Apparently, I missed strange goings on at the Montreal Comic Jam last night, which I will have to link to, when I get a link.

Offered in the spirit of “here’s what I was drawing yesterday,” rather than “these are the greatest drawings of the century.” Pencil’s messy, but you can correct. Above are some faces from a book of old pictures and Elizabethan miniatures.
I’m finding I’m happier and draw better faces if I try to consider the face as a whole, rather than drawing an eye here, a mouth there, and hoping they connect. Making lines underneath doesn’t always work for me, because I still am not understanding the head as a whole structure. If I do that, then it comes into focus.
Working on those profiles, because they are a bone of contention between me and my drawing friends. Where the eye goes is important, also the shape of the head.

Saint Patrick’s day has come and gone, but the parade is today. So, last night, they were getting ready the green food colouring for the beer at the Cock N’ Bull pub. And I was drawing mildly salacious scenes happening around me and my friends Rick and Marr. Rick inked these, or in the case of the below, added some fancy lines and flourishes.
That strange object in front is some kind of mp3-wired hat. What a brave new world!
Unhappily, I forgot to take shots of Marr’s amusing drawings, which he was doing in his little sketch book to add to this set. He drew the same profile Rick drew below, which in this case I inked.
Rick and Marr are somewhat consumed by crossword puzzles. I find these more of a solitary rather than team sport. Still, I’m able to get them out of a jam or two, even though I’m usually reading upside-down.
Now, is “rapscallionry” a word?

Above, a simple, quick cat, in wash. Below, an even simpler cat, on typing paper:
