Or maybe a fun one, if you’re into it.

More drawing from the other night, meeting with friends at the Cock N’ Bull bar. Rick Gagnon was there. Marr was there, too, but he didn’t stay long enough to draw anything. Still, Rick was able to ink things like this drawing above of mine of one of the servers.
Below is my drawing, embellished with extra lines by Rick, of a guy at the next table. I added a scythe, and then the little death figure, which Rick inked.
Rick drew the same guy while I was drawing him, and I inked him:
Here’s a woman at the other table, which I drew, Rick inked. He thought I made her look too old. Obviously there was a lot of variance that night, but I blame the beer.
Lastly, a couple of guys, drawn by yours truly:

This warrior character fears his masculinity is being compromised by his having to ride a giant quarter-rabbit. But the villagers will probably be as terrified as ever. He should have and painted frightening runes on the sides of his mount, and tied victims’ skulls to the saddle, in order to increase the menacing effect.

Here’s something fun. This caricature I did of former Prime Minister, the late John Diefenbaker, is going into an upcoming political documentary. Rather than just downloading it and using it, they were nice enough to ask, and we negotiated a fee. That’s classy, and it’s nice to think of something of yours sticking around, maybe going into schools to be educational, and all.

Above, some fantasy with the Queen of the Fridge. Below, one of the first of the season’s real-life sketches.

And some mono-chromatic characters:

Change of pace: Took a tour yesterday of Westmount and Notre Dame de Grace (NDG) in Montreal with a friend. Part of it was a walk in the greenhouse attached to the Westmount library. Took pictures, and my friend was gracious enough to identify all the plants in the pictures. You can see the entire set by clicking on the picture above. Educational!
Loads of graphical play last night with friends at the Cock N’ Bull Bar. Rick and Marr were also doing crosswords, but those are much less interesting to look at. Above is my interpretation of some pool-playing characters, with a few lines and patches of black added by Rick.
Below is Rick’s more graphical version of pool players, done by his lonesome. His motto is “Darker! Darker!:”
Marr had drawn the below, which I added inks to:
Then I asked Marr for an idea for a picture, and he thought up the below, which I rendered in his sketchbook (Rick adding some background elements):

This was a lot of work. Still, if I want one of these pictures to look less silly, I’d have to carefully plan it: do thumbnail drawings for composition, value studies so I could develop a proper colour palette, and then draw my figures from copy. This would involve multiple studies so the proportions and poses were right, and then my carefully arranging them, probably on the computer, or with paper cutouts. In more complex roughs I would work out the perspective and the lighting. Then I could be ready to painstakingly transfer the rough pencils to the watercolour paper. After all that, I could start painting, and the cat could still walk all over it.
Actually, if it were a commission, I would probably do something like that (except for the part with the cat). Instead, I’m sort of just drawing it all out of my head, and praying for the best. I don’t know.

Looking at my darned “Lord of the Rings” DVDs again. I find the documentaries and the sketch galleries more interesting than the films!
Afraid things are going to look a little warlike here for the next while, because of some projects I’m working on. I don’t love war, but like drawing the accoutrements.

The guy above looks pretty formidable. Might be doing some military-themed things in the next while. But most of what there is to do at the moment, is wait for some things to come through.
Below, some more characters, including, up top, the late Montreal artist Betty Goodwin.

These are a pair of characters from the beginning of Tarkovsky’s Solaris, which I am watching in the Criterion edition, graciously leant to me by my sketching friend Rick. I think they’re his production manager and co-writer, which he put into his film because they were lucky for him, and also close at hand.
The film is lots of fun, because it’s arty, Russian, and philosophical, and mainly lo-tech. This drove all the people crazy who wanted a Soviet answer to Kubrick’s very hi-tech and flashy 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s still a good science fiction film, just totally different from what genre fans like.
