Scrap Paper Pad

By in black and white, pencil, sketches

After a meeting at a law office, I was given a lot of scratch pads made of scrap paper. These are great to scribble idly on while having a conversation. A different part of my brain is engaged doing the drawing, so generally I can still follow and take part in the conversation. This isn’t true if I’m doing a crossword, or messing with the computer (except for drawing on it — but that’s punctuated with the occasional swears, or “tsks,” which is not good while at a friend’s place).

I’m actually drawing an awful lot. But instead of before, when I posted everything, good or bad (and I often have no judgment about my own things), I’m not posting as much. Maybe this is a bad thing, because one of the uses of the blog was seeing where my head is at, and if corrections need to be made. For instance, I can get a little tired of faces always facing the same direction.

March 2014 Monthly Montreal Comic Jam

By in brush pen, collaboration, color, Coloured Pencils, montreal, Rick Gagnon, sketches

It’s been a while since I’ve shown my face at one of these. Also, the last post on this topic got wiped out in my server crash. Since it paid tribute to a late friend, I’m going to have to put it back together again.
jampage-mar-14-2

Still, even though I had to be reminded and coaxed, I’m not sorry I came out last night. Above is a sketch I made of some habitués of L’escalier bar, the venue where the event took place.

The walls around us had been painted white, and covered with scrawls, drawings and grafitti so that things reminded me of a jail cell, but there you go. A few of my pals were there, and instead of drawing comics, we sketched and collaborated on things.

Below is an inking job my pal R. Gagnon did on an old drawing he and I and another artist named Marr did a few years ago. Still not finished (wait until next month), but that’s the nature of these things.

A delightful sketch in my book courtesy of Kaleb, who was given “carte blanche” and drew a “chatte blanche.”

Another Candidate

Of course, I couldn’t resist drawing the opponent of the Candidate below. Beauty is as beauty does, or so they say!

Candidate

Anna-Klisko

Politics aside, for some reason I had to draw the local Liberal Party Candidate. (I feel like my face drawing is progressing)

I’m actually most likely voting Green, or for the lady with the moustache.

I love drawing different types of people. So boring always the same colour of skin. Doing these things fast and furiously seems to help. I may actually fix them later.

I just did this and have no idea whether it’s good or not. Fun to do. I may get sour on it later.

Sketchy-Sketchy

By in ballpoint pen, black and white, pencil, sketches, watercolor

I’m always drawing. It’s my nature. Haven’t been posting much of what I’ve been drawing, but thought I’d change that.

I didn’t draw all of these today. Just was tardy in uploading them.

Here are a few of my pals from the Montreal Monthly Comic Jam. Actually, this is last month’s meeting. There was another last night, but I didn’t have the energy to go.

Here I was in a bit of a pissy mood, drawing while watching a youtube tutorial about drawing for videogames. Doesn’t feel like something I’m suited for, and all those youtube artists seem so accomplished. Of course, the sped-up quality of those videos seems to have something to do with it, but my productions still seem way behind most of these types.

RIP Judy Mappin

By in montreal

.flowersetc_0004

She was really one of Canadian literature’s heroes. I think bookstores (along with book festivals) are a kind of conduit through which authors and readers can keep in touch with each other. Social media, too, but the events allow for face to face contact. When I was a newcomer to Montreal, I felt like less of an outsider because of Double Hook.

Drawings of Me, from Thailand

By in ballpoint pen, black and white, collaboration, ruttan's place

These fell out of an old book. They’re from the time in Thailand in 2008 when I went over to help organize an art exhibition of Montreal Comic artists. I think I’d put them away because I felt it would be narcissistic to put them up.

Well, no more, really. If I’m drawing people, it’s natural that one gets drawn oneself.

ink-on-the-edge12

This is me and my friend Peter, who had the idea for the exhibition, and basically brought me over to Bangkok. The artist, I think, was puzzled by Western noses. A fine Asian art tradition!

Decontamination by Jack Ruttan

By in montreal, ruttan's place, writing

Pardon me, this is a little more restoration. This time of a post that apparently dropped off after my server disaster of a couple of months ago. People I’ve met might be interested in it, so I’m putting it up again.

It’s a contest entry of mine, which won “entry of the day” for CBC “Canada Writes” mystery week. Anyhow, you can read all about it at this [link.]

Some of my friends want me to carry this on and make a novel out of it. Will do my best.

Car-Free Day, 2009

By in collaboration, comics, montreal, ruttan's place

Browsing around, trying to resurrect some Jack links, I found this story I hadn’t seen before. I had spent a day in the street with some other cartoonists during “Car-Free Day” in Montreal, drawing comic strips on easels. Car Free day meant that they basically shut down the city core to cars. This isn’t done any more.

But the day was fun, even though it rained brutally all day. The umbrellas were enough to protect us.

The Ascension Trilogy Book One — Sins of the Father

By in collaboration, digital, ruttan's place, writing

I enjoyed doing this book cover for Thelonious Legend, a new author. It’s a young adult story, but really looks to me like one of these cool “underground” or Beat books from the early 1960s.

Sounds like a cool story. He’s putting it out himself in various formats. Visit the links below to see:
