Yellow and Sepia

I am so wiped out today. Combination of humid heat and allergies. But I’ve been painting lots of things. Not all of it really good, because for some reason I’m painting over old pencil drawings in the sketchbook. But I like how the darks and lights are going. Will do some pretty ones, I promise.

Pushing Ahead

After not posting much, for a while, I’ve been doing a flurry of painting. Seems I need to go through a number of indifferent things to “ramp up” to something better. Anyhow, I’m happier with what’s going on here. Painting lots of cats for this cat strip I’m trying to finish. Wish it felt easier, but it’s part of the process.

Sketches of women and other things. A couple of other posts I’ve been sitting on, because they’re more complicated. Will try to get them up, soon!

I’ve not been blogging as much as usual. Still drawing things, however. Since the weather’s gotten nicer, and I’m less busy, maybe there will be more stuff here, if I’m not totally distracted by Twitter.

Scary Cats

scary-cats

Some fairly scary watercolour cats I did, based loosely on creatures I saw over the weekend. They often look a little deranged to me, but maybe that’s what I see!

Science Fiction Writer

RAH

Sketching away in my big book, which, paradoxically, leads to smaller images, even though I have to “stitch” them in photoshop. That one rocket reminds me now of Thunderbird 3. That’s what you get when you don’t research things. The other rocket is probably the “Jupiter C,” or whatever it was that launched the US “Explorer” satellite. Remember it from a model kit long ago, but didn’t look it up. Also had in mind R. A. Heinlein, probably writing some of his earlier less overtly political stuff about the moon, etc.

A Century of Progress

By in ruttan's place

view-1

I was rummaging through a shelf where I was keeping some of my late Dad’s things, and some items fell out which I had overlooked. A paperback “view book” from the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair and other things. The book is chock full of beautiful watercolour-style illustrations printed on rough paper. I think they’re called “chromo-lithographs.” The size is a little awkward for my scanner, but I’ll try to add more as mood and time allow.

Below is an “official certificate” showing that my Grandmother and Grandfather visited the fair. My Grandma on my Dad’s side was great at keeping records of her many trips. I’ve got her travel journals, but none of her slides of trips which she used to show to us kids on special evening. For some that’s the definition of “boring” but I looked forward to these evenings. Now digital photography makes taking records like that so easy. But aspects of it are the same, if you want to click through flickr.com, for example.

(Update: Just noticed the misspelling of “Hardisty.” Ha ha.)

Now I wonder what things are going to be like in 2033. Very different?

Back After a Bit

By in cats, men, paintings, watercolour, women

colour-1-april-14#23

Didn’t blog for a while. Cause I was sick, and busy, then wasn’t doing much that pleased me. Still could be happier, but at least I’m painting some things. Not horribly thrilled with how the paper’s working. Maybe it’s always absorbed and lightened paint, but I thought that was how it worked, until I painted on some paper that didn’t do that (also wouldn’t take a wash, but this paper business is all compromise, I think!)

Anyhow, the little blue splatters on the rock guy picture were an accident, but they really helped the pic for me. The rest of all this is my trying to get back into watercolour, for whatever reason.

That last character was my Junior High School Shop/English teacher who was something of a right wing buffoon and really had it in for me. I survived, sort of.

I’m sick and feeling sicker. Nonetheless working hard, and found time to draw this tonight, while watching a creepy TV program. I’ve got other stuff to post on something I did this week, but that will have to wait. Have a good night! Achoo!

March 2011 Montreal Comic Jam

By in Uncategorized

I was a little out of sorts at this month’s comic jam. Didn’t have a story to tell in comics, so just drew in my book as below. Rick Gagnon, my old collaborator, finished the last panel.

The creature at middle right was a plastic animal the service left to mark where an order of nacho chips should go. Got taken away before I finished, but I drew it, in time.

Here’s Rick working on this:

And here are Sirkowski and Kurt Beaulieu, just to prove there were other people there:
