Buildings

By in montreal, pencil, sketches

Pencil sketches from old photos of mine of architecture. One is the Frank Lloyd Wright-styled fire station on Notre Dame Street East (now covered in scaffolding), and the other is on Sherbrooke Street E., near the old Library. I can go on Google street view and find out exactly, which is interesting.

Centre Sportif Jean-Claude Malepart

This is pronounced “Mallapar,” (actually, more like Maly-par, sez a franco friend) for you non French-speakers. (I am almost a non-French speaker, by the way, despite spending all this time in Montreal). But in my anglo heart, I still see it as “Male-Part.” I’m sure he was a worthy gentleman, but I’m happy they didn’t […]

The Great Antonio

By in montreal, pen and ink, ruttan's place, sketches

Today, a park in Montreal got a bench in it dedicated to the Great Antonio. He’s a former Montreal strongman you can read about here. Meanwhile, here are some items from my flickr feed to do with him. A drawing I did of him, the way he looked sitting in the Metro in the 1980s-2000s […]

Parc Médéric-Martin Wading Pool

By in montreal, paintings, parks, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

I hope I haven’t already put this up. It’s from last year, and the pool has been totally renovated, so it doesn’t look like this anymore.

Men at Work

By in machines, men, montreal, pen and ink, pencil, ruttan's place, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

One woman, too. They’ve been tearing up the schoolyard across the street from me. I’m being driven a little snakey by the roaring of trucks, the constant beep-beep-beep, and the dust. So, I’m consoling myself by drawing the occasional picture of things. They’ll be here all August, so there is probably more to come.

Digital Painting of a Building

By in digital, montreal, sketches

I assure you, these are hard for me to do. Trying to retain a bit of the handmade charm of the drawing, while the machine wants everything straight and boring. Also, choosing colours is difficult in this medium. In watercolours there are only a few tints, which you get used to. Still, even though this […]

Two Paintings of Montreal

By in montreal, paintings, watercolor, watercolour

I need to take better notes, because it would be nice to know exactly where these places are. One is Ave Laval, I think. The one below is a converted firehall on rue Notre Dame West. Or, I could be way off.

Some Paintings

By in color, montreal, paintings, parks, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

Doing a lot of paintings at the moment. Up there is the control building for the revolving bridge that no longer works. It’s from a 2012 photo, and the graffiti is old, and the bike path doesn’t even go by it at the moment. These two pictures are painted on terrible paper. Sort of like […]

Warm Day Sketches

By in color, montreal, ruttan's place, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

Haven’t been able to write that much, lately. I’ve also got sketches and words from the Blue Met literary fest last weekend, but haven’t organised them. Overcome as I am by end-of-month nerves. Still, here are a couple of things from off my balcony. The police van pulled away as I was sketching it. But […]

Spring-like Sketches

By in color, montreal, paintings, sketches, watercolor, watercolour

It was actually possible, yesterday, to sit on the balcony and draw this little postal van, illegally parked across the street. The above is a tiny little thing, but the colours are pretty.

Rue Notre Dame

By in montreal, watercolor, watercolour

At least I think that’s where it is. I didn’t write down the name of the street when I snapped the photo I painted this from.
