Car-Free Day and Animules

By in cats, dogs, montreal, sketches

Today I’m going to be cartooning at the Eaton Centre in Downtown Montreal, part of the events surrounding Car Free Day in that part of the city. Please visit, if you can make it! Meantime, I bought a new little sketchbook (only 4″x6″), and drew a bunch of things. Mainly animal-related.

Montreal Comicon 2009

By in montreal

Yesterday, I visited the Montreal Comicon, at Place Bonaventure. Very stimulating. A lot of my comic-creating friends in both the franco and anglo communities were there, plus plenty of talented people I had never heard of. I took pictures, and the flickr photo set has names of most of the people, and links to their […]

Street Seen

By in montreal, ruttan's place, sketches, watercolour

That’s a good title for the blog. I was on a bit of a break today, so I painted this picture of the street I live on. Bonus: Old lady!

Sonja Skarstedt

By in montreal

I’ve been avoiding writing about this, because it hit me hard, when I heard about it last July 31. Didn’t want to announce it before the obituary came out, because I didn’t want to be the crow, the one bearing that news. Sad, because Sonja, along with her partner Geof, who ran Zymergy Magazine, plus […]

Worldcon Montreal, 2009 – what a night!

By in montreal, sketches

Went to my friend, Claude Lalumiere‘s launch, for his upcoming book of short stories: OBJECTS OF WORSHIP, at WORLDCON, the world Science Fiction / Fantasy convention, happening in Montreal this year. Funny, two-level suite at the Delta Hotel in downtown Montreal. So I shot this snap up top of Claude, and the book’s illustrator, Rupert […]

2160 rue Bordeaux

By in montreal

Piece of gyproc wall I photographed. It had been tossed out after renovations. Sorry I didn’t take a shot of the building. Maybe I’ll go back and get that. As i was doing this, a couple of guys walked by muttering words that included “kodak” and “malade” (crazy). I guess that’s accurate. Anyhow, here’s the […]

Park Sketching

By in montreal, sketches, watercolour

Nice day yesterday (not so much today!), so I took off on the bike. Sat in the park in the morning, and sketched. People were taking showers in the kiddies’ fountain you can see the edge of, at the left. (I think the fountain (which you can see in the link) was designed by Vittorio, […]

Finishing Touches

By in montreal, ruttan's place

Sara here is painting a stump, the last step in the “Ruelle Verte” project happening behind my apartment on rue de Rouen. “La Ruelita” is the name of the project, I guess. “The little alley.” “Thanks to the Sainte-Marie Eco-Quartier!” (the neighbourhood recycling and ecological org. responsible for the project) A spiral – traditional symbol […]

Old Soldiers Never Die…

By in montreal

The Staue of Maisonneuve was coming down (or going back up! – I don’t know) at Place d’Armes in Montreal. I was zipping by on my bike, back from a meeting, when I saw these statues being wrapped up and ported around. Interesting! (I hope!) Anyhow, here they are for your delectation. More in the […]

Street Gardening Part Deux

By in montreal, ruttan's place

More done on the back alley garden, behind my place (okay, it’s rue de Rouen between rues Shepherd and Chapleau). Art stuff, and decoration this time. I got roped in to help. My neighbour, pictured up above, got into trying to fasten his tableau to a brick wall. Me, I would have tried to drill […]

Street Gardening, Woot!

By in cats, montreal, ruttan's place, women

The local Eco Quartier (a little neighbourhood org. that does recycling, gardening, and ecologically-oriented projects) visited the lane behind my apartment, which was generally a down at the heels place, full of burdock and junk. They instigated a project of planting a garden back there. It’s part of an initiative called ruelle verte. Notice these […]

My Beautiful (former) Laundrette

By in montreal

I’m only getting around to this now (I have a lot of blog posts — mainly stories and photos, backed up. Well, at least one more!) Above is yours truly, along with Sradj Mohamed, a true gentleman. He was the most recent owner of the Laundromat I’ve been going to for 20 years, down the […]

Back to Bangkok

By in montreal

Wish I was there, actually. Maybe not at the moment, because it’s the rainy season. But my friends over there tell me I have a place to stay if I want to drop in. Can also pick up my sketchbook full of Bangkok drawings I left over there. But I was going through old disks, […]

Odds and ends

By in men, montreal, sketches

He’s supposed to be a cheery little guy with a twinkle in his eye. Meanwhile, Walter Matthau is being uncharacteristically menacing (and cryptic): And this is just an old sketch, made in the lobby of the Musée des Beaux Arts:
