Back to Jack

Finished with the labour-intensive event chronicling for now, and back to boring little drawings. They don’t attract as many hits! Still, I’m very happy to have started using the Sony Vegas editing program, and mastered at least a few of the basics. (can’t imagine wanting to use many of those tacky special effects and wipes, unless I’m getting very ironic, and want to do 1980s-style “how-to” films.)

Anyhow, these are more watercolour things. Going to try to do more from photographs, just to get away from my own head, and the occasional shortcuts or painting tics I’d like to get rid of. I want to make things look real, but in an exaggerated way, and funny. Don’t think I’ll ever be very photographic, or precise. But at least I want to be pleasing to the eye, and in control of my medium.

You see, she’s the kind of thing I’d like to improve upon. More personality, and variety. Better costumes, hair, etc.

Les 48 heures de la bande dessinée de Montréal

By in montreal

I was at the above-named event today. Plenty of cartoonists, plenty of cartoons. A surprise for me, because I didn’t know many of them. The Montreal comics scene is indeed diverse. The first day, Saturday, is devoted to creating strips: cartoonists are paired up to produce these. Sunday is for displaying the finished work to the public (on walls and inside a newsprint journal), and attending workshops. Information can be got here: 48hbdmontreal.com

Above are some shots I snapped of the display at the Goethe Institute, which hosted the event.

Below is an interview with Gabby Schulz, AKA Ken Dahl, an artist from New York participating in the festival. I’ll practise my camera-work, I promise!

Say, I didn’t know this until looking at his work, but this is so cool! He’s the artist whose cartoon about the sexism of certain comics fans caused a minor stir on the web. Read it here.

The Rise of the Octo-Moose

By in montreal

I visited this show last night, at Galerie Monastiraki. Wasn’t really sure what they were doing, whether it was a book, or a show, or what. Turned out to be art. Here are some snapshots:

I also made videos where I chatted with the artists. Very pleased that I’ve begun to be able to use my editing program, so these are getting more sophisticated:

Yay! I’m so happy!

This is a comic I drew in about 10 minutes at the last Comic Jam. Then it took me about 4 days to decide what colours to put in. Enjoy!

Crowded Sketch

By in men, sketches, women

crowd-o-people

Lots of scribbly drawing with the roller pen, while watching the American election results on BBC via internet. And with mild dismay, but that’s what happens. Is America going down the tubes? We’ll see.

Getting Out of Here.

By in men, sketches, watercolour, women

But not before I post some new junk, sort of comic related. First, a Daisy Mae:

daisy-2

She sorts of fits into my trying to do “good girl” art, related to that burlesque project, which has kind of gone on hold for the moment.

Then there’s this item I drew on a Twitter challenge. Unfortunately, I misread the challenge. It thought it was a comic-book guy who wanted some thing fighting while holding an ice cream cone.

Great! Done, with a comic-book theme:

BATMAN-CATWOMAN-FIGHT

But no, he wanted The Thing, fighting while holding an ice cream cone. That’s depressing, so I’m posting this, having lunch, and taking off out of the house for a while. Bringing my writing stuff, but not the computer.

De-Zombifying

By in men, paintings, watercolour, women

remy

One last zombie-related picture, painted on Hallowe’en night, appropriately enough. A tribute to Remy, the mohawked guy in the picture, whose gory stage makeups inspired me in this project in making regular people scary.

It was quite an experience, exploring one’s morbid side. Also freedom in making pleasant faces look as disgusting as possible. A little like what one used to do with teachers in school notebooks, but less chance of being caught. Here, you’re actually encouraged to be as nasty as possible!

More things: gotta work on those resemblances. Finally, I also made a web store, and will be able to expand on that. Unfortunately, my present web site design doesn’t let me easily add other items, so the front page is going to have to change.

That’s another challenge which will be interesting. And, of course, there’s the constant challenge of finding fresh freelance work.

October Montreal Comic Jam

By in men, montreal, sketches, watercolour

Something special for this month’s comic jam. Pierre Landry from CBC Radio came and interviewed us about the comic jam. Maybe this is a result of the press attention we got in the Gazette a couple of weeks ago.

Here are some snaps from the Jam, including the interview:

And you can listen to the interview itself, on my other blog: [link]

My pals also dedicated my copy of Frankenstein Réassemblé (“Frankenstein Re-assembled”), edited by Éric Theriault, one of the regular jamsters.
frankenstein-cover
It’s an album of stories in French about Mary Shelley’s famous Monster. (Buy it here from Amazon.ca) Twelves years in the making! (I was wondering if it would ever come out).

Here’s the dedication page my friends drew in, at the jam:

When cartoonists sign your book, you usually get some neat sketches. The suspects here are top, Rick Gagnon, right, Éric Theriault, bottom, Marr.

Finally, a sketch of my own, a quick painting of one of the inhabitants of the very bohemian L’Escalier Bar, where the jams take place: the last Thursday of every month (except December):

Phantasmagoria at Galerie Yves Laroche

By in montreal

I visited the vernissage for this show last night, which was a lot of fun, perfect for Hallowe’en. An artist friend on twitter suggested I check it out. So I did and wasn’t disappointed. Did a little bit of a reporter thing, with my electronic devices: my tiny Lumix Camera, and my cigarette-lighter shaped voice recorder.

The Lumix came through. You can see snaps of the show above. Below is a couple of questions I asked artist Chet Zar. I shouldn’t talk or go “ahuh” in interviews. But I’m happy you can distinguish words if you listen closely, because these weren’t the best audio conditions.

Then I chatted with the show’s curator. This would be a sound file, but I pressed the wrong button. Next time I try something like this, I’ll be better prepared. Though, doing stuff off the cuff this way has its own charms. Except when you totally blow it like that. Apologies to the curator!

I’ll write more in depth about this show later on, I hope.

That night I also tried to catch the launch for my friend’s book. Came in almost late for that, but maybe I can write about it in the next post, when I see a few of the usual suspects again, tonight, at the Montreal Monthly Comic Jam.

Fire Horse/Dog/Rhino Thing

By in men, sketches, watercolour, women

rhino_firehorse1

When you’re wandering in dark places, always good to bring your fire-horse/dog/rhino pet. I suppose it’s an escaped Pokemon.

This drawing below was on the back of the paper. I’m very cheap and don’t like wasting paper. Also, the question came up last night of where to store all these things. I don’t think they’re exactly deathless works of art, but don’t feel right just throwing them out.

Graveyards are pleasant places to sit and think. Look over the names, even paint watercolours. Wait … WHAT THE HELL IS THAT??!!!

Jack’s Monsterization Parlour

By in Uncategorized

Had fun doing this, actually. It’s the reason for all the zombie pics. I had the brainstorm of offering to “monsterize” people’s online pictures for Hallowe’en. Had this notion of everyone turning creepy for that one night.

So visit Jack’s Monsterization Parlour, and tell me what you think! Yay!
